Record Movies on your Computer???

Hello Everyone!
This is my first time post on this website, so I don't really know if I am posting in the right forum. Here is my question:
Is there a way to play a movie on your computer and record it at the same time on your computer? Is there such a software that can do that? What I mean by record is like when you record something off the TV using your VCR. Like that, but all done on your computer. Play the movie on the computer and also record it at the same time on the computer. And no, I don't have a DVD burner. I have a CD burner. I tried to burn it onto a CD (its already a VCD) but it only either records 10 minutes or it gives a disk error on my DVD. And yes, my DVD player can play VCDs. I am tryting to play a VCD on my computer and record it at the same time on my computer. The VCD is corrupt and doesn't work on my DVD, so I need to record it onto my computer so that I can make it into another VCD that works. Is there some sort of software that can help me?
Thanks in advance!
