Windows Media Sound Device Problem

Need anyone's help please!!
I have speakers in my computer but i cannot get sound! I get an error message that says the Windows Media cannot play the file because there is an error with the sound device. But when we look in the control panel to see what sound device we have installed, (so we can download the software off the net) and it says nothing is installed!
Someone please help

It's very lonely and quiet at the reception desk and I need to play music before i go crazy!!

Dig out the driver disc for your sound-card and re-install from it. If you are lucky (?) enough to have windows XP, try using System Restore to go back a few days when the sound was working. Start -All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - System Restore.

hmmm.... I had something similar, but I suggest you click my computer , properties, hardware, device Manager, check for stuff under your sound card and update. Should work... and click my computer from start menu.
