Bittorent is a file sharing protocol. It is getting very popular. Not only are you able to download, your download is automatically uploaded to others. Downloads can be distributed very fast this way.

Try Azureus.

Is it illegal? I know most file sharing programs aren't actually illegal, they are just used for illegal things, but is it one of those programs?

I don't think it's technically illegal. Some of the programs that are shared by the service are illegal, however, so be warned.

Bittorrent is used by many, many reputable companies to distribute their software. The Open Source Community uses bittorrent. Bittorrent allows them to offer their software without the high overhead and bandwidth needs of ftp and http.

No Bittorrent is not illegal. As said, it is used for alot of great purpose and I know being a gamer, Mythic entertainment is now using this feature to distribute large patches and now they offer there latest game via digital purchase only. Alot of people have there own bittorrent sites with there own seeders, which infact do distribute alot of copyrighted material. I have been a big IRC guy to download but bittorrent is slowly earning my respect.
