the anti-virus software is more important in my opinion. the firewall blocks people from giving users viruses and servers. but the anti-virus should remove all of that, u mite download off kazaa and accidentally download a virus or a server for hackers!plus windows xp has a firewall(not a good one though)

A FIREWALL WILL NOT STOP a VIRUS. it only stops intrusion into your PC from a network.

The best Firewall is to disconnect your computer from the network!

The next best is to have a physical Firewall in place ( This is mine ).

The next best is a software Firewall.

Only fools run their system without a Firewall.

What is the best firewall for you?

If possible go for a physical Firewall, after that go for a Firewall that does the job YOU want it to do at the price YOU are willing to pay.

$40 dollars spent on Norton is well spent if it closes your system from the outside world.

$40 not spent on SPF is money well saved if it closes your system from the outside world.

$40 not spent that allows someone into your system and causes $1000 of damage is a very expensive saving.

Lots of people will recommend Norton - McAfee - EZ Firewall - ZoneAlarm etc.

They all do their job some better than others and some cheaper than others.

One thing you can be certain of is that lots of people will have their own opinions that do not agree with other peoples.

The choice is YOURS

Router.

Could you walk me thru how one of those routers would be connected to my m/c and to my BB connection (currently via a USB BB modem to a BT phone line).
Thanks.

Norton AntiVirus doesn't have a firewall. In order to get both an anti-virus program and a software firewall you'll need Norton Internet Security (which is what I use). It also has an Ad blocker, spam filter and parental controls.

Check Here for a simple diagram of how a router slots into your system.

Basically it takes a line from your Modem (WAN) and acts as a network hub on your LAN.

There are different Routers for different types of broadband, you will also need to check your cables to see if the router will accept them.

Any problems PM me.

Also check this site UK Cable Modems

For any anti-virus program to be effective you have to keep it updated. Use Norton LiveUpdate often and you should be protected.

loosechips is correct with the firewall. i used to only have a switch with zonealarm as my program firewall & i get at least 100 - 200 pings everyday. after getting the linksys wireless router my pings dropped to 1 - 2 every other week.

i also have neotrace to find out where the ip addresses are coming from.

in reference to anti-virus programs, i lean more towards mcafee (i've used it at work, school, home) with much success & the updates for the dat files are free as compared to norton's where there's an annual fee - i stand corrected. be sure to keep your dat files updated.

Liveupdate happens automatically ? or what..

I use AVG, BSpam and Zone Alarm.. now thinking for a complete security suite like Norton.
