Maxsearch is a adware browser plugin.
Here is a Symantec site explaining how to get rid of it.
Have fun and good luck.
I would also recommend saving your registry by exporting it to a folder in case you mess something up.
http://securityresponse.symantec.com...maxsearch.html

Here is another site. it says it has a removal tool, but I did not download it to check it out. http://www.2-spyware.com/remove-maxsearch.html

Since it's a browser plugin you could also try Hijack This.

What firewall are you useing, it looks like an alert to warn you that it has been blocked, or it could be Microsoft Antispyware, I don't use the product so I am not familiar with how it works. Check Microsoft Security web site for information.

Turn off System Restore, update all your security programes and check in the Add/Remove programes that it is not there, start in Safe Mode and run all your checks again, including your antivirus.

Hope this helps

The way a lot of spyware works is it puts components (Example: Registry Entries) on your system. When the final component is added it will install itself (browser Hijacker) on your system. Sounds like you have all the components for it to install and every time it tries your Microsoft Anti-spyware is catching it. Like Bookworm, I don't use Microsoft Anti-spyware, therefor I'm unfamaliar with it's abilities, usually most will remove the registry entries. These virus\adware are somewhat new and Microsoft Anti-spyware may not be on top of them yet.
Which means unless you find a removal tool to remove all registry entries for this Maxsearch you are going to have to go into your registry and remove the registry keys thats trying to install this browser plugin (Hijacker). I would look in your add\remove programs as Bookworm mentioned but I wouldn't hold my breath, that would be a little to easy.
Also, have you downloaded & installed anything lately? Sometimes spyware can be hidden in download files.

I was thinking about that. But yet again I am unfamiliar with Microsoft Anti-spyware. But if you did let it install, it might actually remove those registry entries and if not you'll still need to go into your registry and remove it manually.
Choice is yours.
By the way, did you look in add\remove programs for a maxifiles entry?
Also, did you run the microsoft anti-spyware in a full scan mode?

Like I said, you can look in the programs folder and in add\remove programs but don't hold your breath. They put spyware on your system so that it's hard to get rid of. If it was as simple as going into a programs folder marked "known spyware" and deleting it, the anti-spyware companies would go out of business.
Start up your Microsoft Anti-Spyware and run a full deep scan. See what that turns up, then go into your registry and using the search feature in the registry look for those registry entries that the Symantec site listed.
http://securityresponse.symantec.com...maxsearch.html
If you find any delete them, if not you should have it removed.

Did you turn off your Microsoft Anti-Spyware so it could install?

Actually, to be thorough about it, I would recommend going into the registry and removing those registry entries. Almost all of the spyware removal programs can leave traces of files behind that can gum up your system slowing it down. And since your having problems with it not installing, unless you forgot to turn of your Microsoft Anti-Spyware, I would just go in and delete the entries myself and be done with it. You might also do a search files and folders to make sure it didn't put any files anywhere else. Search for MaxSearch, Maxifiles, and I would probably do a toolbar search to see if any was there to be safe.
Make sure to back up your registry first!
