Question Pblm Installing EZ-Firewall (ZoneAlarm) from CA

In NYC, Road Runner offers EZ-Armor for free. It comes with EZ-AntiVirus, EZ-AntiSpam, EZ-PestController and EZ-Firewall. The EZ-Firewall seems to be the same as Zone Alarm Professional.

I installed EZArmor on a computer which had McAffee. I first had to de-install McAfee. All 4 programs installed and are working properly.

However, on another computer which had Zone Alarm (standard-Free). I installed EZArmor after de-installing ZoneAlarm and re-booting the PC. However, only 3 of the 4 programs got installed. EZ-Firewall did not install.

I de-installed, rebooted, and re-installed several times with the same unsuccessful result. Can anyone explain what's happening here? or, advise.

Thanks,
Tom.

According to some sites zone Alarm and EZ Firewall is pretty much the same.

I also had trouble when they upgraded to 6.0 a while back and I'm thinking the reason you may be having trouble on the one that did have the free version and not having trouble with the system without having ZA on it is you need to take certain steps.
1.) Go into msconfig and uncheck any entries pertaining to Zone Alarm (Zone labs Client, True vector) when it ask if you want to reboot click yes.
2.) Uninstall Zone Alarm per Add\Remove programs. REBOOT. (NOTE: If you get any message about some files in use you didn't do step one right.)
3.) Go into your system, I'd use your search feature and delete any files pertaining to ZA or true vector, Reboot.
4.)Install your EZ firewall.
Bottom line is, you don't want any ZA files on your system when you go to install. Which is why I'm thinking you had trouble with the one that had ZA on it and not with the one that didn't. I tried several different ways unsuccessfully and upon finding these steps by a Zone Alarm Guru I installed it on my system with no problems. Being that they are so similiar (If not exactly the same) I believe this is your problem.

Thanks for your quick response and advice. I tried this. Still didn't work. Found nothing in msconfig for ZA or True Vector. But, did find some references in the Registry. I cleaned out the registry and files for both Zone Alarm and Computer Associates EZ-Armor. Re-booted each time I was prompted. Still having the same problem. I find it odd that I still see windows shutting down a program entitled "You shouldn't see me".

There wouldn't have been anything in msconfig if you had already uninstalled it.
Sorry about that, I should have told you to re-install the free version of ZA first, instead I only posted the proper steps to uninstall then reinstall the upgrade or EZ firewall paid for version.
You might try reinstalling the free ZA then follow those steps I posted earlier, if you haven't figured out what the problem was.
By the way, in case you need it there is a forum for ZA, since their basically the same firewall.

ZoneAlarm is getting crazier and crazier about security. It even keeps running when you turn it off. There are some programs, no matter what you do with ZA, it NEVER lets you run - no matter how hard you try or want it to. No amount of configuration (that is comprehensible to anyone who didn't design the program) will change that. All this obsession with security at any expense (of freedom) to users is driving me crazy.

I've got half the mind to uninstall the bloody thing and reformat my whole computer if necessary.

I've never had it not allow a program to run and I've been using it for three years. What kind of programs are you talking about?
I've heard people say that they can't get it to work while trying to do file sharing. File sharing is risky and special permission has to be given but other than that I've never had any problems.

I'm using version 6.0.667. Before this it was fine but the recent update has caused it to be extra paranoid. I sometimes use this free program, 'RegCleaner' but it absolutely fails to run with ZA on the prowl. Sometimes after reducing the myriad of security options to the absolute lowest - turning off whatever can possibly be turned off; and then shutting ZA down (yes, shutting it down) - it will let it run once and then not again for maybe 10 or 20 tries. The program just won't appear. ZA hijacks it. I've even reinstalled the program to no avail. Looks like ZA thinks it knows, better than me, what's best for my computer.

When you re-install it do you follow these steps.
3.) Go into your system, I'd use your search feature and delete any files pertaining to ZA or true vector, except for the installation file, Reboot.
4.)Install your ZA firewall.
Make sure to do all reboots listed, very important.
Bottom line is, you don't want any ZA files on your system when you go to install.
I had big trouble too. It even kept me from booting up 3 times, then when I did get it booted up a couple of programs didn't work. I followed these steps I got from the ZA forum from guru Bill Cherry and since then I've had no problems. Actually, the darn thing allows programs for the first time without asking my permission. Although I got it set at the learn (LOW) setting.
It seems that when they tested it they tested it on systems that never had ZA on it before. So when you say you re-installed, do you do a clean uninstall then re-install?
Regcleaner shouldn't be accessing the Internet, there for, ZA shouldn't have anything to say about it running.
