Internet Explorer/Firefox
Windows XP Home
I read one of the threads that said if you wanted to have less spyware to ditch IE. So I downloaded the firefox browser. When I connect to the internet, IE is still the browser. How do I disable it? I tried setting it (firefox) as the default browser in the set program access and default. It still comes as IE as the browser.
Also, I tried to clean up my start up list. When I uncheck some of the start up programs and then check the normal start up, they all reload. Any way to keep them from reloading? I know you can go into registry and delete them from the start up , but I forgot where it was.
Any help would be appreciated.

To stop IE from being default browser go into Internet properties\programs tab and at the bottom uncheck the box where it says Internet Explorer should check to see if it's the default browser.
Just for your info, you'll still have to use IE for Windows Updates.

I'm on a win98SE and not XP, so if I'm wrong, hopefully someone well correct me.
You said you were checking the normal start up. Once you go in and uncheck what you don't want to start up, just click ok. It will ask you to reboot for it to take effect. You can reboot or wait till you reboot later, but only the things you have checked should start up. Clicking the normal start up button loads them all again.
NOTE: Some programs will recheck themselves when you run them. Weather bug, AOL instant messaging are just a few.

When I go in and uncheck the ones I don't want, I click ok and it tells me that it needs to restart for changes to take effect. So I reboot it. When the computer starts up and begins to load, I get a message saying that I am in selective start up mode,etc... and tells me to check the normal start up mode. I get this message each time I turn on the computer.
I appreciate all the help you are trying to give me. But, I really need to know how to delete items from the start up list. I think. That way they won't reload. I was thinking it was in the reg, editor. But not sure.

Look here:
http://aumha.org/a/loads.php
You'll have to scroll down a bit for the XP section.
