slow running machine

hi, my ram is running at 234mb but when i look at the processes they equate to just over 100mb. the machine takes along time to boot and it appears something is running behind the applications that are open.
i have scanned with anti virus and yesterday installed pc-cilllian trend micro. this came up with no viruses.
i also have a problem when i open my ms messenger and hotmail account. an error message comes up
internet explorer script error.

any advice would be appreciated , also can you give me idiot proof instructions as i'm not that great with computers.

I would recommend a good anti-spyware program. Something better than Spybot & Ad-AwareSE, although, I use both of them also along with spywareblaster.
