RAR help

Hi, I'm just wondering what are .RAR files exactly? Is it some sort of .Zip file? When I open .RAR files, it's always in a notepad format and when it's opened, it has these messed up symbols and stuff. I don't think .RAR files are supposed to be notepad form..but I don't really know what this is so help? Thanks.

basically they are the same thing: compression extensions. but u need a compression manager such as WinRAR to extract the files from the .rar file. You can download winrar for free(free private use, not for commercial use) at their website which i believe is
Code:
www.winrar.com
after you download and install that, winrar will handle lots of other compression types such as .zip, .uha, and others.

I'm not sure that site works ATM, but here's one which does:
http://www.rarlab.com/

When you download it, it calls it an "evaluation copy". Not a problem, only it offers to lead you to its website after "x" days...you just click cancel and keep compressing :P
