Question IE 6 problem and Things to do after installing WinXP

Hey everyone!

Eversince, I have been thinking of reformatting Windows XP and reinstalling it. I've been saving money. Several days after Christmas, I purchased a Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 CD because when we bought our PC last December 2004 (it's been a year), the PC came without the XP CD. The computer technician in the store that we bought the PC from said the XP CD is exclusive. So, if we would want to reformat our CPU, we would bring our CPU there, and of course, we would bring a huge amount of money and could get it back after a day or two. Now, I'm wise enough that I had thought of buying a CD somewhere else. And so I did. I backed up all our files into CD-RWs. After reformatting and reinstalling, I installed the motherboard, and the graphics and sound drivers. I also installed McAfee Internet Security Suite v8 and Nero Express v6. Then, I discovered that there was no Microsoft Office. I thought that when you install Windows XP, Microsoft Office will also be installed. Microsoft Office isn't really my problem. I just want to share what I did. Anyway, I bought a Microsoft Office XP Professional CD from the same store where I bought the XP CD. And installed Microsoft Office.

Now, here starts my problem. I created a new Internet connection via dial-up in Control Panel. Actually, we have an Internet Plan. We pay a cheap amount to have a monthly unlimited dial-up Internet connection. We are after unlimited Internet connection, not the speed. It's okay for us if we have a slow connection. So, I connected via dial-up. THEN, I LAUNCHED INTERNET EXPLORER AND LOGGED ON TO GOOGLE. WHILE THE PAGE LOADED, I DECIDED TO CLOSE THE IE WINDOW. WHEN I CLICKED ON THE CLOSE BUTTON, I HEARD A SOUND SIMILAR TO THAT WHEN CLICKING A LINK IN A WEBSITE, THEN IT WENT TO about:BLANK, AND WOULD NOT RESPOND AFTER A FEW SECONDS. I REALIZED THAT WHENEVER YOU CLOSE AN IE WINDOW WITHOUT LETTING IT FINISH LOADING THE WEBSITE, IT WILL GO DIRECTLY TO about:BLANK AND STOP RESPONDING. SO, I HAVE NO OTHER CHOICE BUT TO USE THE CTRL+ALT+DEL COMMAND. ANOTHER, PROBLEM. I LAUNCHED IE AGAIN AND LOGGED ON TO GOOGLE. I LET IT FINISH LOADING. I TYPED IN A KEYWORD AND PRESSED ENTER. THE IE WINDOW HANGED UP. AFTER A FEW SECONDS, IT WAS NO LONGER RESPONDING. THIS IS ABOUT AUTOCOMPLETE, THAT IS, WHEN YOU FILL UP A FORM. I JUST DISCOVERED THIS WHEN I REINSTALLED WINDOWS XP, THEN I FINALLY DISCOVERED THAT I SHOULD TURN OFF FORM IN TOOLS > INTERNET OPTIONS > CONTENT > AUTOCOMPLETE. MY ONLY PROBLEM NOW IS WHY IS THAT WHEN I CLOSE AN IE WINDOW WHILE A PAGE ISN'T DONE LOADING, I WILL HEAR A SOUND SIMILAR TO THAT WHEN CLICKING A LINK IN A WEBSITE, AND GO TO about:BLANK. BUT THIS TIME, AFTER GOING TO about:BLANK ITSELF, IT WILL CLOSE BY ITSELF AFTER A FEW SECONDS SOMETIMES. BUT STILL, IT'S VERY ANNOYING. WHEN WE BOUGHT OUR PC LAST DECEMBER 2004 WITH WINDOWS XP PREINSTALLED, IT WASN'T LIKE THAT.

I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT'S THE MATTER WITH THE HANGING UP WHEN FILLING UP A FORM, AND THE GOING TO about:BLANK OF AN IE WHEN CLOSING IT WHILE THE IE STILL LOADS A WEBSITE.

A REPLY WOULD BE MUCH APPRECIATED. PLEASE HELP ME. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

Additional question... What are important things to do after installing Windows XP aside from installing drivers and helpful softwares (i.e. Defragmenting the Hard Disk because some say it would speed up your computer)?

.... i might be able to help with

When i perform a clean install i first go to control panel>add/remove programs. I then uninstall all the rubbish applications that come bundled with XP and a new computer, then reboot.
If sp2 was not already installed i now install it and reboot.
Next i install my firewall and antivirus software. If it is a free download i download my firewall first, install it and then download my antivirus software.
The next thing i do (after installing my antivirus) is go to the Microsoft update site and download any updates. Before installing any updates i create a restore point. I now install my updates.

The final download of my initial set up is Firefox. From this point on i will not use IE except for obtaining Microsoft updates.

Now i run the disk defragmenter. I always run my defragmenter in Safe Mode for maximum benefit.

To boot in to safe mode: Press f8 repeatedly while rebooting. When the boot screen pops up use the arrow keys to select Safe Mode.

Reboot and test that everything is working fine

Hihi.... There's no right or wrong answer to that one rjav1990. I was just referring to programs that i don't like/use
The best thing to do is use your computer for a few weeks then go and uninstall anything you think you don't need.
