Password security

I've been advised that using my browser to remember login details/passwords is 'really dodgy' and can leave me open to getting hacked.
So my question is, where can i leave them on the computer that is secure?? I've thought about just writing them down but that seems like a huge step backwards.

I guess you can write them down and then encrypt the document. It will be a pain everytime you need to view them. Axcrypt is one of the fastest and easiest tools to use for free.
