Learning how to build a simple internet site ?

I'm new to learning how to build simple internet sites. Would anyone know what software I can purchase to make this process a lot easier ? Thanks for your time.

The first thing you need to do is learn some basic programming Shane

HTML and php are the most common languages i have noticed while browsing the internet. Once you learn a bit about these you will start to find it a bit easier.
There are literally 1000's of good, free tutorials out there. A quick google should keep you busy for weeks

Start with basic html first.. i recommend "Macromedia Homesite" for the first software (and maybe the only software you'll ever need for html). Don't bother with using window's notepad. The blank screen alone will turn you off

Some hosters like http://www.micfo.com or http://www.godaddy.com give so-called "website builder". You don't need to learn HTML. Just write a content.

My reasoning and experience for this (sorry for all the "wordage") is...

I have to agree with everyone who has replied to your question. I would like to add, if you don't mind, if you are inclined to learn a programming-coding language like HTML and/or PHP, etc, then definitely do so! You will be so much better-off for it. The resources mentioned thus far are all worth your time even if just to browse or tool-around with them.

However, if you're not that much of a propeller-head you are still going to have to spend a little time getting to know how the software wants you to work with it and each one mentioned above definitely have their own "style" of getting things done.

I never liked FrontPage... I'll just leave it at that.

Dreamweaver, although easy to use will require you to learn how to cut through all its bells-and-whistles and to understand why it presents "things" the way it does as well as why you have to create web pages the way it wants you to. Actually, all development tools be they free, WYSIWYG or whatever have some degree of a learning curve, some more than others. I like Dreamweaver a lot, but often ended-up using Homesite myself. But again Homesite will require you to know some things about HTML, scripting Javascript - if you're so inclined, etc. Its got a great built-in Help system too. One thing to keep be aware of is that ongoing updating of the tool was discontinued I think back in 2001. There are tons of users who can help you though.

One tool that I'm surprised hasn't been mentioned is NetObjects Fusion. It is a really powerful but agile WYSIWYG development tool and far easier to learn its idiosyncrasies than Dreamweaver. The Dreamweaver crowd used to pound on it for creating spaghetti code - that's useless and verbose amounts of HTML code - behind the page you create, and to some degree that was true a long time ago. Today's version 9.0 is far more mature and polished than back in 1998 in the v2.0 DAZE. Website Pros, the "owners" of NOF, have excellent tech suppport too and the devotees seem to be quite passionate about it.
