Direct file transfer software

I got a new computer and I want to transfer some files from my old computer to my new one using direct transfer.

My first question is: What's the best cable to use?

but my main question is:
What software do you reccomend I use to transfer the files?

use a serial paralel cable on the com port or if possible use a network cable
dont bother buying software just go into

Start>Accessories>System Tools>Files and Settings Transfer Wizard

click on Files and Settings Transfer Wizard select
