RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, use the following methods in the order presented.

NOTE: Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.

Uninstall the Game
1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
3. In the list of installed programs, click the game, and then click Add/Remove.
4. When you are prompted to uninstall the program, click Yes.
5. When the uninstall process is complete, click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.
6. In the Named box, type "DungeonSiege.exe", "fs2002.exe", "train.exe", or "zoo.exe" (including the quotation marks).

NOTE: The name of the executable you type in will depend on what game you have installed. The executable names match the following games:
Dungeon Siege = "DungeonSiege.exe"
Flight Simulator 2002 = "fs2002.exe"
Train Simulator = "train.exe"
Zoo Tycoon = "zoo.exe"

7. In the Look In box, click the hard disk on which you installed the game, and then click Find Now.
8. In the list of found files and folders, right-click the game executable file, and then click Delete.
If you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes or Yes to all.
Empty the Temp Folder
To empty the Temp folder and the Temporary Internet Files folder, use the Disk Cleanup tool. To do this, follow these steps: 1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Disk Cleanup.
2. Click C: (or whatever drive on which Windows is installed), and then click OK.
3. Click to select the Temporary files check box.
4. Click OK, and then click Yes to confirm the deletion.

Restart Your Computer by Performing a Clean Boot
To perform a clean boot, follow the steps appropriate to your version of Microsoft Windows. Microsoft Windows XP

For additional information, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
310353 How to Perform a Clean Boot in Windows XP
Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me)1. Click Start, click Run, type msconfig in the Open box, and then click OK.
2. On the General tab, click Selective startup.
3. Click to clear all of the check boxes under Selective startup.
4. On the Startup tab, click to select the *StateMgr check box.
5. Click OK. When you receive the message to restart your computer, click Yes. After the computer restarts, click Start, click Run, type msconfig in the Open box, and then click OK.

IMPORTANT Look closely at the General tab to ensure that the check boxes that you cleared are still cleared. If none of the check boxes are selected, proceed to the following method. If you see a selected, unavailable check box (it appears dimmed and has a check mark in it), your computer is not truly "clean-booted," and you may need to contact the manufacturer of the program that is listed next to the selected, unavailable check box for assistance.
Microsoft Windows 981. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Information.
2. On the Tools menu, click System Configuration Utility.
3. On the General tab, click Selective Startup, and then click to clear the following check boxes:• Process Config.sys file
• Process Autoexec.bat file
• Process Winstart.bat file (if available)
• Process Win.ini file
• Load Startup group items

4. Click OK. When you are prompted to restart the computer, do so.
Note To restore your original Startup options, click Normal Startup on the General tab in the System Configuration Utility tool.
Reinstall the Game
To reinstall the game, follow these steps: 1. Insert the game CD-ROM into your computer's CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive.

If the Setup program does not start automatically, follow these steps:a. Click Start, and then click Run.
b. In the Open box, type <cd-rom>:\setup.exe, where <cd-rom> is the letter of your computer's CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive.
c. Click OK.

2. Follow the instructions on the screen to install the game.

Not a valid Win32 application message

I received the message "not a valid Win32 application" when trying to install a new program. Consequently I checked with this forum and other places trying to find "a fix."

Whether it was here or somewhere else, I did gather that the reason for receiving this message could be from errors in the registry.

I ran a registry check using 3B's Windows Registry Repair Pro. I quickly discovered that their $9.95 price for the pro version was worth the money.

Retried my previously non-successful install, and this time it installed with no problems.

Coincidence? Maybe. But I got the results I wanted.

Hi, An extension of EXE doesn't make it an EXE. The file must also start will MZ. Open it with notepad. The very first two characters should be MZ. If not then it's not Executable, but got the EXE extension by mistake. System will not execute any file until it checks the file for the MZ. Good Luck, Jim

I had this error loading several games and fixed this error "Not a Win32 application" by updating my version of InCD and Nero. This tip was one I found on another techie site so I cannot claim the credit. Hope if works for some of you.

Hi
I have the same problem, not with a d/led game though, but with regular software from a CD. I have tried some of the solutions proposed here and none of them worked....
This happens directly even after a fresh installation of win xp, cleaning the registry etc... The installation doesnt launch itself when I put the CD in and the install.exe file displays a DOS icon. I cannot even copy the CD content on the computer.
Other installation CDs work fine so I would think the problem is the CD but I have used it in the past on other computer same OS and it worked also fine. So I am puzzeld...

btw I have a missing driver "Mass storage controller" although all my storage media work fine. Is there a correlation??

Any help welcome!!

... is not a valid Win32 application

The '... is not a valid Win32 application' started showing for no apparent reason when trying to install new games. The cause I eventually found was I had done a cleanup some time ago & accidently removed 'Nero' & 'InCD'. After digging out the disks that came with the DVD RW I reinstalled Nero & InCD Reader & everything works fine now.

When I first read this thread I thought it was going to be a big job to sort out, in the end it was just accidental deletion of software for me. Hope this helps.

Exclamation Most problems solved

Hello I am new to the forum but have been working with computers for about 4-5 years now.

I use to work for a computer store which we have encountered some of the most unusual things to do with spy/adware and viruses, but I have finally encountered the not a valid win32 application.

After 4 hours of tinkering around with things using hijack this program that helps to remove certain viruses i finally decided to try running minimum services through the msconfig menu. Tried disable all the startup first but caused no changes, but I did find out that if my services were all disabled the error would go away and allow the cd to run and when it is all enabled it would lock up again with the cd drive.

To make a long story short if you have nero installed with in-cd you will have to go into the msconfig section through the run command and click on the services tab at top, scroll down till you see the in-cd program service or nero in-cd service some are different, and disable it.

Then you will now have unlocked most of your program problems that running off the use of the cd drive or runs in the hd and has been giving you the win32 error. As for programs that are not games, I am not sure if it fixes them also.

I hope this will help people that are having this problem and if you need any other help, I may be able to help if you email me @ thedarkseid007@yahoo.com just put (computer help) into the subject and I will read it as soon as I see it and hope I can be of assistance.
