Question half/half sound problem on windows xp

hi i recently uprgraded to windows xp from 2000.. in doing this i lost my sound.. after going through lots of forums and trying the advice i feel like i have made no progress... as it stands... i can hear sound through websites video's ect.... but i can not play system sounds... when trying to play a system sound it says that my sound card may be in use.... but i have no other programs running.... when i put on xp my sound icon in the startbar when missing and is now replaced with "3d audio configuration" windows media player worked once but then stoped playing sounds and ituned will not play sound either... my sound card is built into my motherboard.. its a gigabyte board.. and i have the instalation disk, i have d/l all the new drivers and such but still no luck.... if anyone can help that we be awsome.. if you need more information you can instant message me at t2pac4evr@aol.com
