extensions problem acting up

i recently got my laptop a little bit slap accidentally. although running smoothly, even though it create inappropriate sound it vibrates, when i tried renaming a file name it always alarms me that if i change the file name or if I rename a file name the extention might not be useful. but before it doesnt alarms whenever I change file names in my files. now i have to put up the extensions when saving i always have to put either .jpg, .bmp or .gif to save a picture. what went wrong? how come this happened?

Hi Usually you can rename any file anything you want to, but renaming the Extension will prevent the file from being executed or used correctly. You will always get an error when you change the extension. Hope this helps a little, Jim
