How does the key logger program work?

I don't want to be after somebody or spy on someone. I have tried some key logger program for myself and I am really excited that it could log every words that I type. Some programs have the function to send a report email to my address. I feel really eager to understand how this kind of key logger work? What kind of programming language do they use to write key logger? Is it Java, C++ or Visual Basic or Pascal? How could they program work in stealth mode that it is not in the task manager list of Windows?
I don't need to write such program or spy anyone. I only want to understand how that key logger works. I look forward to receiving reply from u a lot. Thank you very much.

The reality of it isn't all that exciting. The Windows API provides hook procedures that basically do the work for you. To catch keyboard events you could use the 'LowLevelKeyboardProc' Function:

You can access the Win32 API from a number of languages. I wont be telling you how to hide from Task Manager, though. If you have to ask, then you probably don't need to know.
