Restoring .dbx files in Outlook Express

Hi,

I just had to install my recovery disc which put my PC back to 'new' state. Before I did this I made backups of everything I wanted to reinstall which included by Outlook Express emails. When I try to reinstall them I get a message saying unable to decompress file. What is that? I can see the files on my computer buy can't get them into my mail.

Can anyone help me?

Thanks,
Kathy

Hey Kathy,

Welcome to this corner of the web
You said you have backed-up everything.....How did you do that ? what program did you use ?

I don't understand that last part of your post, why did you try to reinstall Outlook Express ? Basically, all you need to do is to copy the files you need from the backup [I assume is a CD] to your hard drive and then [this is very important] change the property of the file and remove the "READ ONLY" option from the file....when a file is copied from a backup CD to a Hard drive it will carry the property of the file with it, which is Read Only...that's why you need to change that.

Keep us informed with your progress.

Cheers

I didn't reinstall Outlook Express. Just trying to get back the emails I backed up onto a CD. I tried removing the Read Only but still can't get them back. They are on my computer under C:\documents settings\owner\local settings\application data\ID.

When I try to 'restore' them it says 'folder does not exist, do I want to create it'. Doesn't matter if I say yes or no, still can't get them back.

Kathy,

Check out the following link:

That should help with Outlook express issues.

Putting a dbx file back into OE6

I am sorry I do not have an answer, only a question, but it is related to dbx files so I thought I would ask it here.

When I opened OE6 this morning, one of my message folders was missing. I found it by searching, it is buried in my C drive, but don't know how to get it back into OE in its proper place. When I go to import in OE, I get two options:
1. Import mail from an OE identity or
2. Import mail from an OE6 store directory
I chose the latter and browsed to the location of the folder (Mail Files)containing all the dbx files including the lost one. When I double click to target the missing dbx file it will not open. If I browse directly to it, not through the OE Import function, I can open the folder and see the missing dbx file.

Can anyone tell me how to get this "misplaced" message file back into its proper location in OE? Thanks
