Spreadsheet editor where you can use different background colors within same cell?

I'm looking for a free or fairly inexpensive spreadsheet-editing program that allows a user to assign different background colors to different characters within the same cell. SoftMaker's PlanMaker has this feature, as I understand, but it costs money; I was hoping for a free alternative (or at least a cheaper one). Any suggestions?

Have you tried openoffice? OpenOffice.org

I tried OpenOffice, but unfortunately, it doesn't let you assign different background colors to different characters in the same cell. Thanks for the suggestion though.
