Hard drive on old computer to new PC

Hello. Having not done this before I thought I could pose this question. My old computer running Windows ME and containing hundreds of valuable family photos and over 1400 mp3 recently died. I was unable to boot the computer up in "normal" mode. I would always get a blue screen with an error message. I am however able to boot the pc up in the safe mode. Long story short. What is the best way for me to retrieve those file (pix and mp3s) from that hard drive and put them into use on my new computer running either XP or Vista (not sure yet which I will purchase)? Also, if I were to simply plug the old hard drive could that possibly work? If so would the fact that one hard drive has ME on it and the other XP would that be an issue? Lots of things to consider.

You can add the drive to your new system as a 'slave' drive to retrieve your pics and music files. The new computer will not try to boot from it so it doesn't matter what OS is on it, and it doesn't matter if it refused to boot up properly on your old system. The new system doesn't need to boot from it at all for what you intend to do with it.

It will have it's own drive letter in 'My Computer' on your new PC, and you should be able to access the data on it simply by double-clicking it's drive icon. To summarise:
1. Add to new PC as a slave drive.
2. What version of Windows is on it is irrelevant, as it won't be used to run Windows.
3. Windows XP or Vista can read files created or saved with Windows ME.
