problem while setup of some softwares

i am having problem while setup of some softwares
it says;;;;;;;

system error
The win 16 subsystem was unable to enter protected mode
DOS.EXE mustbe in your AUTOEXEC.NT and present in your path

what to do now????????

my pc other info
#os winxp prof sp2
#pentium 4
#avast antivirus

plz help in detail as i m not expert in computer
