problem with dvd files
Hi people. I have another problem with video files again. After using virtual dub to uncompress a compressed avi file i fed it into DivX to DVD and the dvd video files have been produced out of sync. The sound comes before the picture. Any suggestions as to what might have happened this time and how to correct it?
thanks, any help is appreciated as always

Hey Spizz,
Is the audio out of sync a constant amount or does it go out progressively? If it gets further and further out of sync, trust me, it's gunna be a lot of trouble to fix. If, on the other hand, it's constant, it may or may not be a difficult problem.
Let me guess, you did this:
File -> Open Video File
Video -> Direct Stream Copy
Audio -> Full Processing Mode -> Compression -> No Compression
File -> Save AVI
And when you fed it to DivXtoDVD the result was out of sync? Did you first test the new AVI for sync?
I'll assume you're using VirtualDub MPEG2 version. If the saved (new) AVI is constantly out of sync, load it again and do this:
Audio -> Interleaving -> Audio Skew Correction. It's in milliseconds, try (+) 1000 to delay the audio one second, (-)1000 to play it earlier.
Then File -> Preview output. Adjust as necessary until you think it's correct, and save out another file.
If, OTOH, the audio was in sync in the file you fed to DivXtoDVD, it's more difficult. Try just saving out the audio and compare the timestamp to that of the AVI. If they are not the same, you need to slow down or speed up the audio. An audio editor like Goldwave is best for that. Audacity can do it too and is free, but more difficult to use.
It may come down to a corrupt file and bad frames. If nothing else seems to work, you'll have to scan for bad frames and manually delete them. It's at this point I'd say that it's definitely not worth the trouble.
Good luck.

Hey Spizz,
Try loading the AVI in VDub and start at the first frame and step one frame at a time for a dozen or so frames. Is there a frame near the beginning that says something like "B Frame Decoder Lag"? That would certainly screw up the sync. Even if you don't see that, how about trying this: Load it, and have VDub jump to the first (or next) keyframe. Hit mark in, go to the end of the file, and hit mark out. Save it, and try that in DivXtoDVD.
If that doesn't work, you'll have to demux, reset the audio delay in an audio editor, then reauthor the DVD. It CAN be done with freeware: PgcDeMux to demultiplex, BeSweet using the frontend BeSweet GUI v.0.7b4 for the audio, and Rejig to do basic (no menu) authoring. It'll take some patience on your part, is this file worth the effort?
Good luck.

Eh, let's back up to the beginning. How about loading the original AVI in GSpot to find out the particulars of the audio. Free, here:
http://www.headbands.com/gspot
Is the audio by any chance AC3?

Good call. But in case you want to have another go, you can do full processing on the original video and "scan video stream for errors". Once it's through scanning, save to a new file, it will replace each bad frame with the last good frame. But you either need space for a huge uncompressed AVI, or you have to recompress (quality hit), or frameserve directly to an MPEG encoder.
That in itself may fix the problem, but I doubt it. If the original audio is VBR MP3 you may never be able to fix it. If you're lucky, the original audio is AC3, in which case you save it out directly, reset the audio delay, remux and reencode. Otherwise, demux the VOBs from DivXtoDVD, edit the audio, and reauthor. But again, you may never be able to fix a corrupted AVI. DivXtoDVD is much more tolerant than most encoders, but some files just ain't gunna work.
Good luck. If you're interested there's a bunch of guides at videohelp on nearly every video-related subject.
