Help me retrieve my missing/hidden media files

Hi please help anyone???
I have a large folder with many media files and downloads, it contains about 2000 mp3s wavx wmf video clips, pdf files some compressed software etc. Currently, the folder shows only 101 files and about 400 Mb instead of nearly 3000 files and about 2GB, the disk doesn't show any extra space and lots of the missing files are still playing from windows media play lists. I have some duplicates of the missing files. in other locations and when I copy them back into the folder, the folders shows that the files still exist and asks do I want to replace them? If I do replace them, they still do not show up in the folder. If I copy the folder to dvd disk, or back it up, they still do not show, If I search for MP3s in that drive no result,They have been missing since yesterday, I actually went into the folder to start backing files up.
I run XP corporate edition,
The files are on a 160GB slave disk G drive with about 8 GB free other movie files & folders all seem to be there ok,
the partitioned master has os on C drive with about 2.5GB free space
The folder shows all files with filenames that would come before the alphabet. eg filenames beginning with a number or (brackets) or *symbols all show, but filenames beginning with letters A-Z are not showing. these are the ones that can still be played and are present when a duplicate is copied into the folder.
I run AVG free anti virus and anti spam
G drives and its folders open at normal speed but the damaged folder almost causes a freeze when you click on it

Sorry this is long winded but I'm trying to give as much info as poss

Thanks for anyone who tries to help
