Question Save a programs state

I've noticed on alot/all console emulation software that there is an option to "Save machine state" wich saves everything about the machine. When its loaded at a later time the emulated machine picks back up as if nothing had happed.

I was wondering is there a program out there that will allow me to do the same with a real program.

For Example;
Say I was playing a game but didn't have time to get to a save point, I could use the program I'm looking for to save the programs state, so that I could shutdown my PC. When I come back later I simply load the saved state and the game would continue as if I had never left.

Windows XP can already do that -- it's called hibernation mode.

I alread knew about hibernation mode but I want to save the state of just one program not the whole machine. And be able to save more than one state.

Thanks for the reply. I should be more clear about what I want to use it for.

I've got a game that has mods installed but the games save function does not include the mods when it saves so when I load it back up the modded parts are missing. I thought about using a virtual machine and use thats save state feature to save my progress, but the game requires connection to an online account before it boots up and the online account will only register to one computer. And I carnt register it on the virtual machine because my real PC uses it for other games. I've notice though that after it has booted it no longer needs connection the to online account to keep playing.
