Norton Antivirus
I have Norton AntiVirus (2007 I think). It has only been installed about 6 week and I have been prompted to renew my subscription, but I know this will cost, and I feel as I have already paid for the protection itself, I shouldn't have to pay more for it to continue working. Could someone please tell me what will happen if I don't renew it?
-Will I still be protected against viruses?
-Will I still be able to run the system scan?
If the answer to these questions is no, can anyone recommend a FREE antivirus programme that actually works.
Thank you x x x

Currently running Avast on this machine. AVG is good as well, I've used it in the past. Both are free and easier on system resources than Norton. Google for them. Occasionally, I'll run one of the free online scans as well, e.g. eTrust, bitdefender, Ewido, TrendMicro, Panda, etc. Google online scan.
Good luck.

Hi TwinkleToes22
Further to the comments made by fritzi93, you must uninstall Norton, prior to installing either AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 7.5 or Free antivirus - avast! 4 Home Edition. Only ever install one anti-virus product, as installing more than one is not recommended and would be detrimental to your system.
Norton products are notoriously hard to uninstall at times, as they embed themselves deep into the operating system.
After you have uninstalled Norton, via Add or Remove Programs under Control Panel, reboot your computer and then run the following tool, in order to clear any remnants: -
Norton Removal Tool
Reboot again and you should be ready to go.
Remember to configure your chosen anti-virus product correctly, by using the Help Files, or by browsing to the relevant forums, update it on a daily basis and scan your computer at least once a week.
Good luck.

Yes, that's right. Good catch.
I recently did a restore from recovery discs for a friend. Uninstalled Norton normally and it buggered the box. (I believe when I tried to clean the registry of any remnants). Had to start over and use the Norton Removal Tool. Dunno if later versions are so nasty to get rid of, but it tells you something when Norton offers the removal tool on their site. Yes, one AV program only, more is not better.
Good luck.

Hey guys, there is no need to uninstall NAV2007 from the computer and to try free AV program. As you mentioned, you have 6 months old subscription, you could upgrade to latest version of NAV2007
just follow this link:
www.symantec.com/newnav -- For NAV

there is a need to uninstall norton,,its bloatware,,it slows system down it used to much resourses..it take more time for pc to start and shutdown..get avg free..why pay for a antivirus,,, when there decent ones for nothing..and just as good,,, sometimes better..i think norton was invented..so PCworld could make money on returned pc,s from customers ,the idiots in pc world always reccomend norton apps ..as they no your have problems in the future if you uninstall it...i beleive in one thing... you pay enough money to buy a system ,,,you also pay good money each month to be on the net..why do you have to pay for virus software..when its microsoft that actually makes weak OS systems ..microsoft should be giving antivrus away for free..as its there fault there software is easy to hack..i dont see mac os and linux with all this problems.
