Your motherboard seem to be pretty old, this may explain why XP can't find proper drivers. Is the sound onboard? I can't really find anything that would name the missing audio controller.

According to Gateway you have a sound card installed, are your audio plugs in an expansion slot as shown here, click image to focus http://www.overclockeddoc.com/bookwo...0io%20slot.JPG

if they are Get Everest, copy and paste the Computer / Summary section
http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/...-Edition.shtml

it may give the card, Gateway list as a Creative PCI card but need to know more to link to driver.

This is the link to your Asus a7V8X-MX motherboard drivers. audio and vga are listed http://support.asus.com.tw/download/...Language=en-us

one point, your audio plugs and your monitor socket must be on the I/o plate as shown here for these drivers to work http://www.overclockeddoc.com/bookwo...0io%20slot.JPG

Get Belarc, copy and paste the report, omit the Software section, it gives Product Codes for your OS and the Windows Critical Updates.
