First of all, my computer information is
here and the backstory to the problem is
here (and yes, the background information linked to in that thread is relevant as well).
Basically, here's my problem. If I install the Realtek HD Audio Drivers (currently using R1.75) on my computer, Windows and everything else says that they're installed properly and working, but I get no sound out of my computer. However, if I:
1) Install the Realtek drivers.
2) Uninstall the drivers from within the Device Manager.
3) Reinstall the Realtek drivers.
4) Uninstall the drivers from within the Device Manager, then uninstall the Realtek package from Add/Remove Programs.
5) Run an Add Hardware Wizard.
then the Realtek HD Audio Drivers will report that they're properly installed and functioning and my computer will play audio properly. Except that my system becomes unstable. If I have actually working audio, I will experience random crashes while audio is playing (with a stop code 0000007F, 00000008: meaning that there was a double fault that was either the result of bad hardware or faulty kernel-mode drivers). To verify that it is just the audio drivers causing the instability, besides the fact that I only experience these crashes when audio actually works, I can run Fallout, which will crash within five seconds if and only if my audio is working. It will not crash if I have no audio devices installed or if the audio devices are installed normally and claim to be working properly but I don't actually get sound out of them.
This will happen on a clean install of Windows XP, both SP1 and SP2. Even if I install nothing but my chipset drivers followed by the audio drivers, I still will not get sound unless I go through that bizarre procedure of un/reinstallations. I'm really at a loss for what to do at this point, as I've spent weeks trying to figure out why my system had no audio and was unstable. Any help would be much appreciated, as I don't think I should have to choose between having an unstable system or a soundless one.
