Age of Empires III and the Sims 2 graphic problems

I am experiencing 2 different errors with these 2 game - The sims 2 and age of empires III. Both problems are due to some graphics problem, These problems started after my pc was formatted and have tried every solution I found on forums and help sites but still nothing.

the errors are

Age of Empires III -

Initialization failed
Direct3d initialization failed. Possible causes:
Old or corrupted graphics driver.
Direct3d improperly installed.
Hardware acceleration disabled.
Starting the application with the workstation locked.

Please check the log file for more information.

The Sims 2 -

Failed to enumerate any Directx 9 compatible graphics adapters in this system!

Please make sure you have a directx 9 compatible adapter and have installed manufacturer provided driver.

The application will now terminate...

Here are my system information if it might help (there is much more stuff but i didn't write it all down, ask if u will be needing more info)

your graphics is running in 16 bit mode your need 32 bit mode..check to make sure you have latest drivers for your card,,also hardware acceleration needs to be enabled ..you using onboard graphics ? also make sure dx3d is enabled as well ..check system information and click on tools direct x diagnostics. go to start /all programes/accessories/system tools to do this.

so checked the direct x diagnostics and saw that I had the direct 3d disable, enabled it and age of empires worked (thanks a lot for that) but still the sims is not working, I am not getting the same error as before but a pop up window is coming up, with a red cross on it and no info about the error
