nortons antivirus 2004 & internet security 2004 definitions download

Hi All,

I have just recently bought and installed Nortons Antivirus 2004 and Nortons internet security 2004. I only have dial up at home and hence the reason why I want to download the virus definitions at work, put them onto my USB stick and take them home and install them.

I don’t have a problem with downloading the latest virus definitions for Anti Virus 2004. I get onto Symantec website and download them. By doing this, I don’t have to be logged on at home for ages running live update. That’s the anti virus side of things cleared up.

Now the problem I am having is that when I go to live update for internet security, there is a shyte load of updates which need to be downloaded and I don’t want to do it via live update because it will take forever. One of the updates is something like 26 Mb. This would take way too long for dial up to download. All up, I think there is about 33 Mb to download to get all my definitions up to date. I have been on Symantec.com to see where abouts I download the definitions like I do with the virus definitions and for the life of me I cant find where I can download them from. I don’t really want to run live update because it would take hours to do.

Can anybody help me or point me in the right direction as to where I can download the internet security definitions at work and take them home on the USB stick???

Thanks

Updates for Norton Internet Security's firewall component can only be downloaded via Liveupdate. One of Symantec's biggest drawbacks is the size of it's combined updates - and it's heavy use of system resources. I dumped it in favour of two separate av/firewall applications two years ago. 'puter works more smoothly and updates (4 times a week) take less than two minutes on dial-up.

Thanks for your reply. Now I know that it cant be downloaded and has to be done via live update.

I have noticed that its quite resource hungry. I suppose I can use the Windows XP firewall and as far internet security goes, what is another good one which isn’t as resource hungry??

Thanks again,

I use Sygate Personal Firewall and Avast Antivirus. Can only be obtained by download:

Sygate Personal Firewall:
http://smb.sygate.com/products/spf_standard.htm

Avast AntiVirus Home Edition:
http://www.avast.com/eng/desktop_protection.html

Both are free, but they do 'Pro' versions for a small charge.
Both easy to update signatures and definitions which are small.
Sygate updates are not frequent but it's the AV updates which are more important, and Avast supplies updates several times a week, unlike Norton which only sends out virus updates once a week via liveupdate.

The 'Pro' versions are worth paying for. Still loads cheaper than Norton and just as effective as Norton as far as my experience of them is concerned. And nowhere near as demanding on system resources. Hope this advice helps u.
