Restoring incredihell emails

I accidentally did a partition restore image to the whole hard drive instead of the partition I was supposed to. I used a Data Recovery tool to get what files I could including one with my Incredimail (Incredihell) emails which had the following files in it.

_#_Temporary_#im_.imh
_#_Temporary_#im_.imm
0 Assorted emails.imh
0 Assorted emails.imm
0 Domain.imh
0 Domain.imm

There were a lot more files in the folder, all ones I had created in my old incredimail program except for the top two that say Temporary, I don’t know what those are.

When I click on one of these files it opens the incredimail program and shows me an email with the cursor in the “To” box,
“0 Assorted emails.imh” in the Subject box,
“0 Assorted emails.imh (3KB)” in the attach box and
“0 Assorted emails.imh” is written in the body of the E mail.

When I open one of the files with Note pad it has lots of information in it like this....

×ÍÆšÓBùÅðÎ
ÿ_“h_o_”^‚XrPcHVAN6F)=4
*ÿ!òèèêõíàïÒâËÔÄÄ¿³»¢¹ ?·~·m¸\¹K¼=À/Å

I installed a fresh copy of Incredimail with (Build ID of 1850934 and a Setup ID:2) onto a computer with Win98SE as the OS.

I then went to the Incredimail program and did a
“File/Data and settings transfer/Transfer to new computer”
which created a cab file which had all of the files I had just added.

I then went to Incredimail program and did a
“File/Data and settings transfer/Transfer files from old computer”
and opened the cab file I had just created, I could see it transfer the files I had just added.

I closed Incredimail and then opened the program but the imported files did not show up, it still list the 4 messages in the inbox that came with the Incredimail install.

I did a “Transfer files to new computer” before changing anything on a fresh install of Incredimail and got a .cab file with the following listings.

AddressBook.imb
AddressBood.imb.bak
Folders.imm
ImDataProfile.reg
imsl.dat
Inbox.imh
Inbos.imm
TempContacts.imb

It looks to me that I still have to find more files before I get what I want.

I tried copying all the .imh and .imm files from the Data Recovery folder into the Incredimail/Default Identity/Message Store and to Windows/Im/Identies/Message Store. I closed and reopened Incredimail but the files did not register.

I can see the files I need, it seems I am close to recovering my emails but I could be wrong on that I wish I had never heard of this program!

Any assistance appreciated. Thank you in advance,

Daniel

It sounds like you recovered some of the files, but not nearly all of them necessary to be able to read the old messages. I just checked the last data & settings transfer that I did & there was 136 files in it. You may have lost the actual messages themselves. I periodically do the Data and settings transfer/Transfer to new computer” & put it on a cd-rw in case something like this happens. I know I'm not much help to you, but good luck anyway.

This is what I did

Daniel,

Here is what I did. I don't know if it will work for you, but I hope so. First, I installed Incredimail on my new system. It created a new user account like this:

C:\Program Files\IncrediMail\Data\Identities\{XXX-XXXXXX-XXX-XXXX-XXXXXXXXXX}

What I did was copy my old identity folder (with the '{' curly braces) to the C:\Program Files\IncrediMail\Data\Identities\ folder. I then proceeded to copy and paste the new identity folder name to a text editor, so I wouldn't lose it. Then I just deleted the new folder and renamed the old one as the new one. Don't use the default user folder because it doesn't seem to work. In fact, I just deleted mine, but that's up to you.

So under C:\Program Files\IncrediMail\Data\Identities\, I have:

\{59078E56-2F8E-437C-8838-XXXXXXXXXX}
Should be unique to your computer. Has the following subdirectories:

\AddressBook
AddressBook.imb
files.imb

\Message Store
.....folderName.imm
.....folderName.imh
.....\Attachments
..........\{1B08E62B-F775-11D5-8766-XXXXXXXXX}
..........\{1B08E62B-F775-11D5-8766-XXXXXXXXX}
..........\{etc....}

So there you have it. Sometimes I rue the day that I downloaded all of my mail to Incredimail. Right now I'm working on a script to extract all of the text a reformat it in just plain ASCII format. It shouldn't be too difficult using Linux and the 'strings' command with 'sed' and 'awk', but I'm learning Perl, so I'll try it with that. If I get something useful, I'll post it on here. Good luck!

Anthony

Hello Anthony

Not sure whether you are able to help, anyways, here goes.

I had to reformat my PC due to virus and so I have copies the Incredimail Folder in Program Files and transfer to another computer.

Well, after reading all the threads posted, I could say, I have back up my mails wrongly.

Do you think I could still retrieve all my mails? I have installed the new Incredimail program. I have also search for my Default identity in the old Incredimail folder but there wasn't any Identity or even the {curly braces} in the Default identity folder.

Anyone out there who can help, would appreciate it very much!

Thanks
Lene
