For ripping I use EAC (Exact Audio Copy), it's quite good at ripping scratched discs. Use Lame in conjunction with EAC to convert to MP3. CDex is popular as well. Both free, here:

For editing MP3s, there's MP3DirectCut. For more advanced editing of various audio formats, Audacity is good. Both free, here:

Hope you find something suitable at the links above. Good luck.

You can rip using just media player, but..
Freerip:
Quote:
FreeRIP is a Windows application that lets you save audio CD tracks to Wav, MP3, WMA, Ogg Vorbis or FLAC audio files (this process is known as ripping). FreeRIP is also a audio file and mp3 converter and it can convert audio files from one of the named formats to another. E.G. FreeRIP can convert a WAV file to MP3 or a FLAC file to MP3, and so on.

Even the free one does what you want.

Editting:
WavePad Sound Editor
Quote:
This audio editing software is a full featured professional sound editor for Windows or Mac. It lets you make and edit music, voice and other audio recordings. When editing audio files you can cut, copy and paste parts of recordings and, if required, add effects like echo, amplification and noise reduction. WavePad works as a wav editor or mp3 editor but it also supports a number of other file formats including vox, gsm, real audio, au, aif, flac, ogg and more.

We make WavePad free in the hope you will like it so much you will be tempted to upgrade to WavePad Master's Edition.
