Office Standard upgrade

we recently purchased a new comp. on our old comp we had Office Standard edition 2003. we have now purchased the upgrade 2007. in order to run this on our new Vista do we need to install the 2003 first THEN install the upgrade? will it run w/o the 2003 office?

Any help is always appreciated!
