Point me to a utility that identifies duplicate files?
Hello,
For years I've taken a very lazy and impractical approach to backing up and copying my files. Some files I'll copy to my secondary HDD, some to my USB external HDD, some I'll simply make a second copy on another disk partition on the same drive in case the first gets corrupted or inadvertently deleted, etc. There's no rhyme or reason, and in the event of a disk failure, I'm certain to lose valuable data - not really a backup plan at all.
All of this has led to a bunch of duplicate files spread all over my internal and external drives, and I'm ready to get organized and to devise a truly simple and effective (preferably automated) backup system.
Step 1 will be to identify all files on my computer (across all drives) that are duplicates, and to either remove the duplicate copy(-ies), or move them to my new NAS drive where they'll form the basis of a dedicated backup drive.
I don't have a ton of files (I could probably whittle everything down to 200-250GB, including my Vista installation), so I'm planning to minimize all of my files first, then make use of a backup utility to copy my important files and directories to my external and NAS drives daily. Soon I'll move my NAS drive to a friend's house so that I'll have some geographical dispersion as well.
The big question is:
Is anyone aware of, and can recommend, a utility that will somehow scan all of my drives and report and and all duplicate files? I can take it from there, although it would be even nicer if the utility could then move all the duplicates to a folder that I specify.
Not sure if it matters, but in total I have (1) 320GB internal HDD, (1) 500GB external (USB) HDD, and (1) 320GB NAS drive. The internal HDD is mostly full, the 500GB is about 1/3 full of entirely redundant files (my lame backup system), and the 320GB has not yet been used.
Thanks in advance for any help!
