Start up/Speed

Hi,

A typical queston, I suppose, how do I get my computer to work faster? It seems slow lately. It takes a while to start up. Apps don't seem to pop right up, espcially after just starting up. Then sometimes, things work fine.

Even after I wait for a while, and then open up IE, it sems to take a little longer the first time. After that it seems ok. I made Google toolbar inactive from it.

I get the Flashlight for a few seconds when I click on MyComputer in Windows Explorer, which I thought was strange.

In start up I took off (inactive):
GoogleToolbarNotifier
RegistryBooster
America Online 9.0 Tray Icon
AOL Companion
SpySubtract

Here are some comments based on the web site ( I removed the ones with the "*":

In my experience. AOL software makes a huge difference. If you are not using aol, get rid of it as compleatly as possible. Download adaware and spybotS&D and run both.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. I do have adaware and spybot. I don't run them once a week, but I do run them.

I am going to do some searches on aol, and what can be kept running, and what doesn't need to be. I'd like to keep it. If you know of any such tips, please let me know. 9.1 seems better then the previous couple. Would the aol startup programs make such a difference?

Thanks again.
NYFile.

I saw a commercial today for a web site called finallyfast.com. It is suppose to help you speed up your computer.

Does anyone know anything about it?

Thanks.

No, but I don't like the sound of it.

FinallyFast.com offers free scans. If your computer is slow, you can scan your computer for performance, spyware, junk files and clutter.
Definately not!
My browser allready supports web accelleration, so that will do for me.

Any app will take longer to start first time.

You use trekblue software? See this page :

First thing you should ever do. Use an offline defragger, like perfectdisk.
Don't bother with M$ defrag, it's useless for such purpose.

Set the pagefile to a specific size. Depends on your RAM level.

Disable hibernation if you don't use it. (in control panel/power options)

Smile Have you tried?

Hello
You could check some really simple things like;

Overheating Computer - Open up the computer, clean out any dust then make sure the fan(s) are all working fine and have easy access to clean air.

System Tray Icons - Delete all the ones you REALLY dont need.

Run Defrag Softwear - Like Disk_Contented said, try to do a defrag

If Nothing Works - If you try everything that everyboddy suggested and still nothing happens and you just cant take it anymore you could wipe all your hard-drives and reinstall windows

im only 14 so i couldent come up with some really good technical answers but if you try to eliminate every possablity you should find the real problem soon enough
