No Sound

Hi, new user here so go gently.

I have recently lost sound on my computer. I have a C-Media AC97 Audio Device. In device manager it has a yellow exclamation mark, as do two other things, ATM Network controller and base system. I have looked on here and tried my best to erase the problem, uninstalling, installing. rollback, I've tired to get rid of this device and load the other one mentioned but the present one just reloads itself. I am also unable to use the system restore. It appears to work until the very last minute and then says it hasn't made any changes. This is the same thing on all the different dates I have tried. I have also "tried" to follow other instructions for getting rid of the C-Media AC97 but I'm afraid it is beyond me.

This is my last hope, otherwise it's back to the shop an an expensive bill. They believe that I have had a recent windows update which has caused the problem.

Any help gratefully received but remember, it has to be plain and simple (much like myself)
