Graphics issues

My newer graphics card recently broke so I switched to an older card (ATI All-In-Wonder 8500 Series), and I am having some serious issues getting it to work. I have tried uninstalling the display drivers and anything in the "Add or Remove Programs" that is ATI related, then reinstalling the driver, and every time I reinstall it, my first time booting up freezes. After I restart the computer my old settings seem to be okay (1280x1024 resolution and such) and everything looks okay, until I open a browser. Whenever I try to scroll I get intense graphics lag.

The only way I can stop that is to go into the advanced options of my Display and turning the Hardware Acceleration to none. But no matter what I do, when I try to open a game it says that the game failed to start 3D acceleration. It says to make sure I have Directx 9.0c and that my video drivers are up-to-date.

I know I am installing the correct driver, and I know I have Directx 9.0c and Directx 10 installed.

Any suggestions anyone? Someone said that there could be some problems with the registry and my best bet might just be to reformat my Hard Drive. I actually have a new copy of Windows XP Pro (which I'm using right now), so that wouldn't be a problem to reformat...but if there is any way to avoid that it would be great =)

You don't think DX 10 might be the problem? Your old card won't support it.

My understanding was that DX10 was backwards compatible with all the others. I read that although it may not do anything for you, it won't hinder the regular operations of DX9 and before.

As to what bookworm said,
Yes, the .Net Framework drivers have been installed.

Is it possible that there are some deep issues in the computer and the only fix would be to reformat? Or is the issue most likely the graphics card itself?

Try an update installation, this way, in other words tell XP to use the driver,

1. Install instructions for new driver:
2. Download file
3. Right Click the downloaded file and select Extract all
4. Click Next select a folder to extract the files to (Example: C:\Downloads\new xxxx) and click Finish
5. Right click "My computer" and select Properties
6. Select the Hardware tab and click on Device Manager
7. Search for the problem driver, right click it and select Update driver
8. select “ No, not this time “ to connect to Windows Update
9. Select "Install from a list or specific location (advanced)" and click Next
10. Click Browse to browse to the location were you have extracted the driver to ((Example: C:\Downloads\new xxxx) and click Next
11. Click Finish
12. Click Ok when prompted to restart

Well, that's XP, sometimes you really need to show who's boss and tell the perisher what's what
