Did you try SafeMode 'Last Known Good Configuration' ?

To load the last known good configuration in Windows 2000 / XP reboot the computer and as it's booting booting press and hold your "F8 Key" which should bring up the "Windows Advanced Options Menu" as shown below. Use your arrow keys to move to "Last Known Good Configuration" and press your Enter key.

Did you try system restore to an earlier date in safemode ?

The system restore utility can be accessed in safe mode and used to restore any previous restore point. Simply restart XP in safe mode and go to 'start\all programs \ accessories \ system tools \ system restore' then follow the instructions to restore your system to the point of your choice.

Have you thought about a fresh install? Have you installed any new components lately?

Smile

There is always the option to save everything by removing your hard drive and using an adaptor in a desktop computer, before you do the factory restore.
