sounds like a sound driver is missing or something, use the instructions below to get it yourself, with out any information about your computer, no one will be able to point you to the software you need, there is a thread in the windows XP forum where people are doing this.

you should be able to find the driver fairly easy. unzip it using a program such as winzip (google that if you don't know what it is) if the file is compressed, be sure to remember where the folder is that you unzip it/download it to. there will probably be an install program included with the driver download, in case there is not:
1) go to the control panel and click on system, then in that window click the hardware tab at the top, then click on device manager
2) scroll down to sound, video and game controllers, click the [+] sign beside it incase it is not already open, there should be one or two items here with an exclamation point beside them/it, if there is not then your hardware is not properly installed or windows is not recognizing your hardware for some reason or another, but thats a whole other problem.
3) right click on the one (if there is more than one) that is obviously the detected speakers, it should say something like "Audio Controller" or "Sound Device" and click on update driver.
4) When it asks about connecting to windows update, click no, it usually never works anyways, then choose "install from a specific location", make sure the check box associated the browse button is clicked, then click browse, find the folder that you downloaded/unzipped the drivers in, if it doesn't highlight the OK button try a sub directory of that folder, sometimes archived drivers have a few folders, it will probalbly be named something like "drivers" or "WinXP", when you find the right folder the OK button will highlight. Click next and your drivers should install if you have the right ones, you may have to restart your PC afterwards.
