No sound from internal speakers

I have just bought a Dell Vostro 1510 laptop. It is running Windows Vista.
The sound works through my hi-fi when I plug it into the headphone jack. However, there is no sound from the internal speakers. I have re-installed the Realtek audio driver that you get on Dell's website and I have checked the volume control switches and sound in applications.
Can anyone help?
