I have sound on the internet but not on media player..

Any help with this will be greatly appreciated.
This problem came out of nowhere and has been going on for months now.
I'm getting sound on the internet..on any & every site.
But I'm not getting sound on Windows Media Player.
I've tried downloading other media players but none of them will play any sound. Whenever I try to play a song in WMP, I get this error message:

"Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly."

But when I try to play a video on WMP, the video plays but, there isn't any sound to it.

Please help me.

that is strange,first step,see if there any yellow ? marks on audio or multimedia in device manager, if so uninstall the drivers there and restart pc making sure you can can be connected to the net,this should allow windows to reinstall the sound drivers for you. if that dosnt work post a belarc report so we can see what drivers to look for,get belarc here.

by the way,are you running external speakers,check connections.

ps,sorry to reply again,try this first,uninstall windows media player first,restart pc and reninstall same from microsoft. i had the same problem a while ago and it was actually the cd/dvd rom itself gone duff,i stuck a phillips dvd lenz cleaner in 2 or 3 times and it worked ok for a while then gave up,bunged an external rom on and its been ok ever since,good luck man.

there arent any yellow ? marks on anything in the device manager.
ive tried uninstalling windows media player & reinstalling & that didn't work either. i also tried installing other media players like real player & it wouldnt play sound either. ive checked the speaker connections & everything is fine there. i don't think it could be the speakers anyway because i can still get sound on the internet. anyhow..i'll post my belarc report seperate.
