Which Free AV to use? AVG?

Is AVG still considered to be the best free anti-virus option?

I have no problem with it, but sometimes it seems to takes up a lot of resources. Is there another option that won't take up the resources?

I found some older posts, but wanted an up to date point of view.

Also, while I am at it, is it necessary to have Super Anti Spy running all the time from start up?

Thanks!
NYF

Hi NYF,

AVG still uses resourses, I use PC Tools http://www.pctools.com/free-antivirus/ along with Super-Antispyware it's a good combination.

Thanks for the reply. The resources AVG took up got noticiable about a year or so ago. I thought they were going to do something about it.

Is PCTools just as good with less resources?

Keep Super Anti Spy in start up then? Resources with them too, but for shorter periods of time it seems.

Thanks again.
NYF.

I use AVG Free on my laptop and desktop and it is still a reliable antivirus application.

BUT I have noticed recently that the antivirus is opening a popup window advertising to upgrade to AVG Pro and is becoming extremely annoying especially after logging onto Windows

AVG DIDN'T really fix all the spyware stuff. Example, to view hidden files (where spywares often are) which you can enable from control panel. It still disable you to view hidden files even after a run through.

Then as you know.. it really take up resources.
