Need help program error. explorer.exe generated errors and will be closed by Windows

Every time I right click on a desk top or document file, I get a program error message that states "explorer.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program". I also get the same message if I left click the "File" tab of My Documents. I am running Windows XP and Internet Explorer 8. I have tried to restart the program but I get the same results. Perhaps I am not doing something correctly.
