Windows Media Player: "An Internal Application Error Has Occured"

Windows Media Player hasn't done anything on my computer in a while. when i try to open a file in the program i get a message that says "An Internal Application Error Has Occured." and that's it. i really need help, i want to keep wmp but it's really not doing anything. i downloaded and tried to install the upgrade to version 9 from the microsoft.com website, only to recieve the very same error message halfway through the installation. i can't uninstall and reinstall the application, nor can i delete the files and programs manually. any suggestions??

edit: this happened a while ago, so i'm not sure what happened leading up to it. i just used real player for a while, but now i have files that will not work without wmp. the program is not in the add\remove programs list, and when trying to delete the files manually, they suddenly reappered in the folder just seconds later.

if anyone has any suggestions or questions that could help, i'd love to hear them.
thanks.

Take a look at the Microsoft Knowledge Base article, Several dialog boxes are blank (it's the one quoted on the page Losecontrol4u linked to).

True to Microsoft tradition, an article about blank dialog boxes also addresses the error message (under the Symptoms heading), When you try to start Microsoft Windows Media Player, you may receive an "An internal application error has occurred" (or a similar) error message.

Running the regsvr32 commands listed on that page usually fixes the WMP problem.

Miz you are a life saver, I have been working on this problem for 2 hours and your suggestion of Microsoft article 831430 was what finally fixed the problem. I believe there must be spyware that unregisters jscript.dll and vbscript.dll. So more people get directed to this page, here are other symptoms that this article fixed.

1) When searching in Yahoo I was getting "Sorry, Bad Request."

2) When trying to run Norton Security check I was getting "To continue without JavaScript, click here."

3) The help->about internet Explorer was empty, it would not give me a version number or a product number.

for those of you with this problem, and the above fix only works on some user accounts on the PC:
-go into the user account that it works on (the that regsrv32 jscript.dll and regsvr32 vbscript.dll doesnt return error 0x8000400)
-open regedit (start/run type regedit <enter>)
-locate this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\CLASSES\
-right click on it and select permissions
-add one of the other users to the permissions
-click on advanced and select "replace permissions on all child ... "
-press OK and it will propagate proper permissions to all keys under classes
-now you can go to the other user accounts and fix it with regsvr commands above.

seems something while installing/uninstalling corrupts the registry entries, and windows restores them only for the user that does the install/uninstall... so if you are gettting the "unspecified error" when trying to reregister those DLL's to fix WMP, try all the users to find out which one is still working and follow my fix...

this is also a known bug when using widgets with Windowblinds, corrupting those registry keys on every boot.

hope this helps someone, thanks for the origional info in the thread, helped me narrow my problem alot and find the above fix!

Im having the same problem only none of the solutions so far have fixed it. When tryin to use Windows Media Player i get the "An internal error has occurred." error and then my desktop is locked. I cant click any icons. I've tried pretty much everything I can find for solutions to this and nothing is working. It started when I forgot my Administrator password so i used a security hole while repairing windows to access my user accounts. Well it didn't work like it did in the past so i just continued with the windows repair. Before I had Windows Professional and not being able to find my Windows Pro cd I repaired it with Windows Home. I'm not sure if this could have caused the problem or not but none of the solutions have worked yet and only way to unlock my desktop is to reboot.

It sounds like some have gotten the solution by going to the MS Knowledge base and others are still searching. For a beginning start point, what about uninstalling Windows Media Player first and than reinstalling it from MS site? That way, you'll get a fresh version.

Another tip is DON'T set ANY playeer as your default because than you will have a lesser likelyhood of player conflicts when you switch from Real Player and WMP as you play different types of content.

Try the uninstall and reinstall from MS Web site first.

Jack

Smile It worked for me

Method 1: Reregister Jscript.dll
1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type regsvr32 jscript.dll, and then click OK.
3. Click OK.

If the file does not register as expected, or if you receive an error message, the system file may be missing or damaged. To extract the missing file in Windows XP, follow these steps: 1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type msconfig, and then click OK.
3. Click Expand File.
4. In the File to restore box, type the name of the file that you want to restore.
5. In the Restore from box, type the path of the Windows XP .cab file where you want to restore the file, or click Browse From to locate the Windows XP .cab file.

Note The Windows XP .cab files are stored in the I386 folder on the Windows XP CD.
6. In the Save file in box, type the path where you want to extract the new file, or click Browse To to locate the folder that you want.
7. Click Expand.
8. In the System Configuration Utility dialog box, click OK. If you are prompted to restart the computer, click Restart.

Hope its usefull 4 u
