Reinstall Pains

Whenever you are going to do a clean install of XP, use "Files and Settings Transfer Wizard before you format... It can save a lot of headaches later.

Hi,

Been thru this a few times, when you reinstall XP PRO, it deletes all your IE settings and passwords. Back up your favorites And I am talking about the r option. After install, Files and Settings option is what you need to do. Good Luck.

Hope that helps?

Here:
Start/all programs/accessories/system tools/files and settings transfer wizard.
A Wizard will start that is easy to follow. When prompted, select to transfer settings only, unless you have loads of room. In which case you can copy the lot.
It has options to save to floppy, via a cable, or to hard drive etc.

wowser, I never knew this. (is there a "newb" stencil on my forhead?) I am curious. Recently my father had some issues with his new Compaq pc and he decided to "restore" it via Compaq's restore thingie. Instead of bothering to save all his email, etc, he just did the restore. Does anyone know if this form of restore totally formats the drive and or partitions? or could he have used this file and settings wizard to back up the info to another partition or folder before the complete system restore? IOW, does it make sense to create a new partition to actually save stuff to? (assumes there's only one pc in the house)

In the case of my brothers "Tiny" pc, it did just that.. Formatted and put the drive back to "as bought" condition. I expect the Compaq approach would be the same, (as to the restore recreating a single partition though i couldn't say) to eliminate drive errors etc

A seperate partition is a good idea (and the way i do it) not only for this purpose, but for any saves (instead of in my documents etc)

Give it a couple of gigs and you could ghost it anyway, thus making the Compaq restore disk unnecessary and a "just installed" image allways to hand.
