hard drive imaging software

Hi,

I am looking to take a snap shot off a hard drive on a computer and then, hopefully, take that snap shot and load it onto another machine, so that the second machine will be an exact replica of the first machine.

I beleive that Norton Ghost can do this and I was wondering what everyones opinion of this is or if there is a better product on the market.

Cheers

Craig

I use Ghost all the time setting up new machines. It works great.
Only thing is hard drive on new machine must be the same size or
larger.

Hi,

Thanks for that, What is your experience of Ghost when moving an image from one machine to another where the hardware is different ? Does it cause a lot of problems ?

Thanks

Windows handles that well, it detects new hardware the first time you start the cloned machine. I have had to use the 95 or 98
disk before if the hardware was not found. I have not tried cloning
an xp machine yet, and am not sure how that would be handled with xp's hardware authorization.

I would actually be using Windows Server 2000 . Has anyone got any experience with Ghost on this platform ?

Cheers

I have used Symantec Ghost EP with windows 2000 and 2003 server and it works like a charm,, also I have to disagree with figo111 first post in regards to size of the drive,, I have ghosted a 10 gig drive into a 80 gig drive without any issue under Win2k server.

You have to remember that ghosting and imaging using ghost are two different thing,, ghosting is, dumping a image drive to another drive directly (in Master and Slave position), imaging is to create an image of a hard drive and saving it as a file for backup or whatever else purposes.

Sorry...but figo111 is correct. As he noted: "the drive has to be the same size or larger". In your case, you've ghosted a 10 gig drive on to a larger one..a 80 gig.
