Useful Programs - Freeware and Shareware

i found these on another forum (not sure if i should mention which one) but i thought i would post it anyway because i found it very useful and downloaded a lot of the freeware programs myself

trillian, icq - i've got both, since they both have troubles on occasion.

reget deluxe 2.1 - best download manager i've come across

dBpowerAmp - audio conversion

CDex - cd ripping utility; kicks mucho ass

WinDVD - dvd player software

winamp - best audio player EVER

dfx for winamp - winamp enhancer; works best on good speaker setups

nero - cd burning utility. 0wnz all competition

partition magic - disk partitioner - very handy indeed

tweakui for xp, tweakui for all other versions of windows - 'nuff said

POW! - best free popup killer out there

winISO - .iso creator

winrar, winzip - both excellent file compression tools

ws_ftp pro, cuteftp pro - two excellent ftp clients

ad-aware - removes spyware (european mirror - main site appears to be down at the moment)

diskeeper - better defrag program than the standard windows version

maxmem - frees up RAM when your system starts getting bogged down

regcleaner - cleans old and unnecessary registry entries from your system (still, be careful with it)

iolo's system mechanic, tweak-xp, xp antispy - various windows tweaks/modifications

online time - updates your computer's clock with an online server

doom9 - miscellaneous audio and visual tools

t00ls - tons of windows utilities

ACDSee, yes - even though the one that comes with XP is quite alright.

3DMark2001 (Test your computer setup - Not free)

VirtualNetworkComputing - free PCAnywhere type clone from AT&T labs; much smaller and more efficient than PCAnywhere.

IrfanViewer - free Image Viewer/Editor;one of the best IMO.

Catch-Up - free program from CNET which scans your system and gives links to software updates.

Cleaner 5 this baby can turn 5 gigs of video into 300 megs. get the thing.

MBM 5 don't fry your box this program checks all voltages, fan speeds and temperatures in your case. pretty good.

this isnt even 1/10 of the programs there, so if any of the mods can tell me if it is ok to post the other forums address. i will post it.
Ps the original post has direct links to most of the program websites, but im not sure how 2 do it. can anyone tell me?

Interesting list. I have a couple of notes on a couple of items there. CNET has discontinued CatchUp (I'm sorry to see it go, I found it very handy). Jouni Vuorio, who developed RegClean is begging people to stop using the product (although it works well) and move to his more recent effort jv 16 Power Tools. He considers RegClean to be an early and crude effort that is much more efficient in the newer version (they're both free).

ok, here is the link to the other forum, im not sure if you will have to register or not but hopefully the link will take you directly to the correct page. most of the programs are freeware, some are share-ware and some you may have to *buy*
id just like to say that the link will take you to a somewhat of adult orientated site, you have been warned.

Thumbs up

Thanks for the progs info, jack daniels 23!

I didn't know about "POW!" But I use another windows-closing program - "NoAds". It's page is http://www.southbaypc.com/noads And it is free, too. You can see there also some other little free progs by the same company.

Hi folks, just saw the part about pop-up blockers. I would like to mention a couple of items that have worked for me. The first is called No! Flash. Unfortunately, I don't have the addy, and the little box at the bottom says I can't send attatchments. Anyway, look for it, and give it a try. As I said, it worked great for me, it's caught everything so far, I haven't seen one pop-up since it was installed.

The other is a simple regestry fix to stop this new messenger service that has been popping up lately. You can get the fix on
http://winxp.bink.nu. Just scroll down the opening page, and you will see it. Since I installed them I haven't seen ad 1, a true blessing.

I mean, holy crap people, you still use pop up blockers?!

The best part is after you get it and install, go to Tools > Add-Ons > Get Extensions. It should be listed in the "popular extensions" area at the bottom, but if not, search. It's called Adblock Plus. Never see an ad again! Most flash & java will have a little "adblock" tab next to it, and clicking it lets you remove it. Replace everything except the domain name with "*" and it will block everything from the site (BE CAREFUL...)!

MaxMem doesn't actually do anything, and in the long run will make things slower. In the short run it's great though.

Nobody mentioned AVG or Spybot or Adaware or openoffice or.... ....

PIDGIN! http://pidgin.im/pidgin/home/

Multiprotocol IM. Very very VERY good.

Also zsnes & http://vimm.net

Great SNES emulator & great site with legal (I think) ROMs. Whatever, they have chronotrigger!

Check out http://freshmeat.net too sometime. It's mostly Linux stuff (obviously this is a windows forum) but all the good stuff gets ported to windows (like pidgin). M$ stole from open source, so can you!

Right now the best compression comes from 7-zip (look it up), even though I find the UI a bit too clunky.

The GIMP of course deserves a mention. It's *almost* as good as photoshop, it's missing CMYK support though.

Audacity is a multi-track sound editor that is just now turning into a great program.

Also, screw pcanywhere. WarFTP will let you set up a ftp server, dyndns.org will let you point a domain to your computer; tightvnc will do the whole remote desktop thing with *extreme* speed. Sure it's three tools to replace one, but having your own domain & ftp server is quite nice in and of itself. TightVNC is also multiplatform and comes with a java applet & miniwebserver so you can connect from *anywhere* on *any* machine. I've used a friend's Treo to VNC before...

One helluva first post, eh?

I guess someone has to bash the windows n00bz into shape though. If anyone in the class has any questions, you can hit me up at mngrif###gmail.com
