Back-up OS and Applications

I recently had to reinstall Windows. Although I had back-up all data and photos, reinstalling the OS with all applications and customising them to my personalised settings is very laborious task, especially drivers.

Can Windows and Programs be backed-up in an external drive and restored to their original settings ? What those DLLs ? If so, what utilities are recommended ?

Norton Ghost is a popular backup/disk imaging program. Your disk image can be backed up to either an external drive or CDs.
