my sound stopped suddenly

I was working away and listening to music and in the middle of a song, my sound suddenly stopped. I asumed it was the speakers i had plugged in and unplugged them. wrong. I looked at the mixer while music was playing and everything seems to be working, but i cant hear the sound. i checked under devices and it says "this device is working properly" and in everyway it looks like its working, but no sound comes out. i downloaded latest drivers and that didnt work either. I work with music and without sound i am screwed. Please help me, i would much appreciate some brains....thank you in advance... here are my details in advance....

no sound

I have an i5 desk top and the other day the sound stopped in the middle of a song. if i view the mixer i can see the green ":thingy" (sorry for using technical terms) going up and down but no sound comes out. I get sound when i use headphones, i tested speakers in another computer and they work fine. When i looked in device manager and at the device "realtek digital audio" it says its working perfectly, but there is no jack information there. please help as i work with music all the time. my mother board is an intel DP55WB. i already updated the driver a few times and still nothing, though if the driver wasnt working i would assume the headphones wouldnt either. thank you in advance for lending me your brains....

hi, lets test sound. start- control panel- at upper RH side click view by and pick large icons. find and click SOUND icon- at top click sound -then click any sound slick test and it should flash. If it flashes the dound driver should be fine.If you don't hear a sound you have 2 choices: 1. speakers are bad, but i doubt this. 2- the point where the connectors come out of the motherboard are defective. The cheapest fix is a new sound card. When the test button flashes the motherboard thinks the test was fine, butfrom that point to exit isnot working properly.Just to be on the safe side I would try different speakers before I would spend money on new speakers. Good luck....

thanks but did all the tests before. everything LOOKS like its working, but no sound from speakers. I get sound from headset though in the same usb plug, ???? I tested the same speakers in a second computer i have and they work fine. I have a 1 gig video card which i am not sure the computer is using, i think it may be using the factory installed one. I am a little confused. can i change the sound card without disturbing the vid card? i thought they were the same thing. thanks for you help, now if you can help a little more please
