Cannot install operating system (hardware problem)

Hello people,

I have just recenltly purchased a new computer (about 12 hours old) but I have problems installing an operating system (currently i only have access to windows98se).

But when i boot up my computer and put in my boot up disc and select to start the computer with cd-rom support and type d:/setup i get the setup screen, but then it goes horrible long. I have made a step by step slide show from it with my digital camera.

Well I have made alot of photo's of the bootup process, here goes:
Picture 1:
http://www.imageshack.us/img1/1783/1275.jpg
This is a picture of when I start up the computer.

Picture 2:
http://www.imageshack.us/img1/6854/1273.jpg
This is where you can choose what you want to do, 1:start windows98 from cd-rom, 2:start computer with cd-rom support, 3:start computer without cd-rom support.

Picture 3:
http://www.imageshack.us/img1/3930/1276.jpg
This is the first screen I see, it welcomes me and to continue I need to press enter, which I do.

Picture 4:
http://www.imageshack.us/img1/6707/1277.jpg
Here it prepares to install windows98.

Picture 5:
http://www.imageshack.us/img1/8310/1279.jpg
Here it say's it will make a routine check of my system.

Picture 6:
http://www.imageshack.us/img1/8752/1280.jpg
Here it say's the FAT's don't match, and scandisk has come to the conclusion that version 2 is better, and asks if I want to repair it, I say yes.

Picture 7:
http://www.imageshack.us/img1/3267/1281.jpg
Here is say's that scandisk will make alterations in drive c:, it asks if i want to make an undo-disk, i say no.

Picture 8:
http://www.imageshack.us/img2/7674/1359.jpg
Here it say's that the file cthen gibberish) is damaged and can't be used, it asks if i want to repair it, i say yes.

Then I get a dozen orso more screens like picture 8 but with different c: gibberish names.

Picture 9:
http://www.imageshack.us/img2/360/1361.jpg
Here it say's that scandisk has discovered that there is a problem with file C:\ which can result in an error if i would try to acces that file, it asks if i want to repair it, i say yes.

Picture 10:
http://www.imageshack.us/img2/1875/1363.jpg
Then it starts repairing but as it hits 47% I get picture 10 which say's: The main file of C:\ contains to many files, scattered clusters are being stored as files on c:\. Your main file of c: can only contain 512 files. Scandisk cant store anymore clusters becouse c: has reached its limit. You can complete the restore of c: by removing some of the files.

When i hit enter then I go back to dos and get this screen (sorry for bad quality):
http://www.imageshack.us/img2/7335/1364.jpg
It say's that setup has found errors on the hard disk, I should correct these errors before i can continue with setup.

When I hit enter my computer reboots and everything starts all over again.

Any advice?

Have you tried running fdisk from the Win 98 Floppy Disk.

Try Deleting the Partition and Creating a New One.

Let us know how you get on.

Yes, I did a search on google and the fdisk was the first thing I tried.

It goes like this:

a:\fdisk
I get a screen saying that my harddisk is bigger then 2 gigabyte.

Then I do the following steps described on this site: http://support.microsoft.com/default...WebContent=1#1

But then as I choose to delete the partion I get this screen:

http://www.imageshack.us/img2/6503/1486.jpg

It asks if I want to delete that partion, I say yes, then it asks me to enter the name of that partion. BUT as you see on my picture above (circeled in red) the name of that partion concists of strange symbols. So I cannot type the name and delete that partion.

On another note, a friend of mine said that if I would borrow his windows XP cd, that that cd will automatically make a partion for itself and would fix the problem. Would that work?

Thanks for the tip, only problem that the site which contains "wipe out" is offline.

I searched google but I couldn't find any other mirror sites, does anyone has a copy that could be uploaded?

I hope that the site is temporarily offline.

Thank you very much for uploading it.

And it worked! It went pretty fast it only took a second after i gave the command "wipeout c: /nq /np" before it said there were no partitions on c drive anymore, then I made a new one with fdisk and I was back in bussiness.

Thanks for your help it saved me a trip to my local computer merchant.
