From bad to Worse! Modem and Monitor problem

My friend has a Compaq PC, running Win 98 second edition. He was having problems with the computer being slow, so he had a co-worker come over and help clean it up, to hopefully speed up his PC. Well after he finished he couldn't dial in to his ISP, it wouldn't even try to dial, it would say can't connect to remote computer, immediately after hitting connect tab. He called his ISP support, they ran some diagnostics on the modem and determined it was bad. I suggested we take it out physically and remove it from hardware and then put it back and reinstall. After we opened the case and removed the modem, and then put it back in, the monitor wouldn't come on. The light comes on showing pwr, but not picture. We have checked all the connections and everything appears to be good. The video card is integrated onto the mother board. There was some corrosion on the case itself but not on any of the internal hardware. I thought that possibley a piece of that corrosion fell onto the motherbaord when we turned it over to take out the modem. I know just enogh to be dangerous as you can tell from this post. I would appreciate any suggestions that might help determine what happened.

Thanks

Any idea of what could have went wrong with the monitor would be much appreciated, I am still wondering if a piece of that corrosion shorted out something?

unless the person that changed the modem had a static charge and touched the motherboard killing something....it could be a detection problem. if the modem is fully seated back in the pci or isa, or amr . try using the cmos jumper to force the bios to redetect the devices and it may boot, you can pull the cmos battery out for about 15 minutes if there is no jumper. make sure there is no static build up by grounding yourself to the case. also check around for any wires that may have accidentally been unpluged when the modem was beening removed/installed.

Thanks for the help, the monitor is back to working again. So then we could finish what I tried to do to start with, which is uninstall the modem and reinstall it. And that took care of the problem.

Thanks
